Notes
The data that are currently available include district level racial/ethnic achievement gaps, district level average achievement, and district level demographic/socioeconomic data. Race-specific district level mean scores (including average scores for white, black, Hispanic, and Asian students) will be released in the next few months).
District level average achievement data were reported in the New York Times Upshot article in "grade equivalent'" units. Achievement gap data available for download here are reported in standard deviation or "effect size'" units. Achievement gaps are not currently available in the metric of grade equivalent units, and race-specific mean scores are forthcoming. For interpretability, roughly speaking, 1 standard deviation is equivalent to approximately 3 grade equivalents.
There are three errors in the data that will be corrected in the next update. For now, please disregard achievement scores for the districts of Redwood City, CA (leaid=0632130), Menlo Park, CA (leaid=0624570), and Tredyffrin-Easttown, PA (leaid=4223640). For each of these school districts, a single charter school was mistakenly added to or excluded from the district; this affects both estimated achievement score and demographic composition. A forthcoming data update will correct these errors. For an explanation of how and why we determined which district a charter school should be included in, see here.
For general documentation about these data were constructed, see the technical/methodological and documentation information here.
